Re: AX at Great America

Dave Dunwoodie and I just did an AX at Great America with the BMW club today. I was really pleased by the site. Location and access is excellent. The asphalt held up good with good traction. The proportions of the lot is good, the course they designed ended up with lap times of 60-75 sections, so it...

Re: San Mateo Mechanic

Have you checked out GD Racing in San Bruno? Gary runs a one man shop, so you know HE does all the work. He only works on air-cooled Porsches and really knows them well. His shop is also a 5 minute walk to the San Bruno BART station. He's worked on my Porsches for years and have always been satisfied.

Sticky tires mask bad driving?

After driving on R-compound tires for a couple years, I've been driving on street tires recently. I've noticed that I have not been managing my slip angles very well (autocrossing once or twice a year doesn't help either  ). With street tires, you feel and hear it when the tires struggle. With...

Ha, the Chinese have a similar saying:

AX #5

It was an interesting event today. Starting off with a cold overcast and windy morning, the day got better in the afternoon and finally turned sunny. Andrew Blyholder designed the course, which looked a little funky on the course map, but ended up being a nice course, offering a wide range of looks,...

Re: Passengers?

Kevin, why don't you just hone your skills and become an instructor? That way, you can give anybody you want a ride in your car. You'd also be helping out the club in a great way.

My two cents.

Re: stock 911SC

Oh man! How do you get a loan on a 79-83 SC!!!!!! A bit old for most lenders... Funny how we use the term mechanics lein, this time is really does apply to a mechanic. :D Dan, was the 911SC just something you came across or is it a model that you have been specifically looking for? Good PAX potentia...

Dan, The SC is running like a champ, I was actually asking about my 2.3L I-4 BMW. That's why I was asking from a more engine theory perspective. The car was recently tuned up with valves adjusted. It idles rough than it should, which suggests a intake manifold leak, but the mechanical blew smoke in ...

Engine ping/knocking theory

Here's a theoretical question.

High compression engine running 91 octane fuel. Intake manifold may have a slight air leak.

Could this somehow lean out the mixture from what the computer is expecting, which results in the engine knocking?
