Top Up or Down for DE only?...

Post by Ken Jones » Sat Aug 23, 2008 12:44 pm

I have seen people involved with the DE portion at Sears driving with the top down on Boxsters. GGR event. So, I'm trying to determine if I can go top down at Thunderhill if I'm only running as Driver Ed - no TT.

thanks,

Ken -

Thanks for your question; this kind of thing changes from time to time so it's good to review it once in a while.

First of all, if a car is eligible for DE it is eligible for TT these days so one doesn't need to forgo the TT based on car configuration.

Here is the relevant section from the PCA National DE Minimum Standards:
1. Open Cars: Any make of car delivered with factory-installed roll over
protection meets the minimum standards for PCA DE events. In these
cars the soft-top must be in the up position or the hard top installed.

If a car does not have factory installed roll over protection,a roll bar
must be installed, which meets the "broomstick" rule (the driver's
helmeted head is below a bar placed on top of the rollbar and
windshield). All targa tops must be installed unless there is addition
roll over protection. All sunroofs must be in the closed position. The
windshield alone is not considered to be factory roll over protection.
Since the Boxster (S or not) is regarded to have factory-installed roll over protection, it must be run with the top up.

These rules were adopted mid-season by the GGR board which might explain the difference in what you saw at Infineon v. what I'm telling you right now. I realize this is probably not what you wanted to hear but perhaps you can console yourself with the fact that tall men earn more.
