2008 Proposal (AJF-4) Revert to Prior Car Classification

Post by Andrew Forrest » Sun Jul 01, 2007 11:10 am

Proposal:
Replace the car classification system (for TT only?) with the previous model/degree of modification based system (the "old system") subject to the following updates:
  • apply to the old system, all rule changes relevant to classification that have been made in the interim since the adoption of the points-based system.
  • create new classes for any new car models that have been introduced since the adoption of the points-based system (Cayman?)
  • revise all other rules that make reference to a modification points threshold so that they continue to work with the old classification system.
Rationale:
The purpose of this proposal is to get this change on the agenda of the current DEC so that it will investigate and evaluate this proposal. Making the proposal is not necessarily an endorsement of the proposal, rather it reflects a desire for an open discussion and independent evaluation of the two competing classification systems. Some veteran time trial participants have indicated that the points-based system is a deterrent to participation. If we are to continue having a TT series, this possibility needs to be taken seriously and, should it be deemed true and serious enough, a change may be contemplated. In order to effect the change, a proposal has to be submitted so here it is. Needless to say, change comes at a cost so flip-flopping between classification systems is not something to be taken lightly. Likewise, there are other reasons why TT participation is down (TT participants "graduate" and new members have newer cars which they are reluctant to prepare as described elsewhere). All classification systems are imperfect by nature but the particular imperfections matter.

if we look at this proposal as submitted it doesnt address any new cars that have come out of the Factory in the last few years. What mods will be allowed for the models not classified in the classes Improved and Production for Caymans for example?. that is just the tip of the iceberg. The old rules had issues that would have to be addressed but this proposal doesnt do that. If a group of members wanted to bring back the old style of rules it would take alot of work to make them current and who ever submits this proposal needs to do that work at this time to give the club a set of rules that would be current to 2008.

The role of the DEC is to take proposals like this one and see if the members want it .. but the proposals need to be fleshed out by the proposer not the DEC

Valid Criticisms

Larry's observations about this proposal are spot on. It is up to the people who want this to happen to address the listed defects and deliver both a more complete proposal as well as a consensus (to the extent possible) in the early fall time frame (e.g. at or prior to the open rules meeting).

This Proposal Needs a Champion

Post by Andrew Forrest » Tue Sep 18, 2007 10:49 pm

Attention all who are interested in seeing a proposal of this sort succeed:

This proposal is still in need of someone to flesh out the details and to produce the consensus necessary to implement it. The open rules meeting has recently been scheduled for October 7th. If this proposal isn't complete by then it will fail by default. Please contact our Competition Director, Dan Thompson, for details about what is required.
