2008 Proposal 914-4 wheel sizes

Post by demick » Mon Jul 02, 2007 6:55 pm

Last year, the 914-6 was given an exemption on wheel sizes to allow for 6" wide wheels to be used with no points penalty. The Rationale was that these cars shipped with the same wheels as the early 911's which have an allowance for six inch wheels with no penalty, and 5.5 inch 5-bolt wheels are difficult to find. For more info see:

http://comp.pca-ggr.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=121

I propose this year that the same exemption be given for the 914-4.

Rationalle is that although the 914-6 shipped with different wheels than the 914-4 (5-bolt vs. 4-bolt), the wheel sizes were the same. So if the 914-6 is allowed 6" wheels, the 914-4 should be allowed 6" wheels without penalty too.

Currently, the point penalty on this is unfair to the 914-4: Base points of a stock 914-6 with 6" wheels vs. a 914-4 2.0 with 6" wheels currently is:

914/6 with 6" wheels: 275 points
914/4 2.0 with 6" wheels: 250+50 = 300 points.

Applying this 6" wheel exemption to 914-4's along with the 914-6's will even the playing field.

good job Demick.
I agree with your reasoning.
a 4 cylinder with the same wheels should not be pointed higher than a 6.

Tough call for me.

If the OEM equipment is exceeded points should be added. No exception.

I think the issue here is the points hit for 1/2" of rim is way to much...For any car.

I can say that my car is not much faster on 7's than on 5.5's when I run with DOT-R's underneath it.

that is part of the problem Trek. I feel, as do many others, that the tire size (width) has more to do with the performance potential than the wheel width up to a point. Like a 205 on a 5.5" wheel.

Also the current wheel chart is not the absolute minimum wheel width for all models. There is no such thing on a 986 as a 6 and 8 inch wheel combination from the factory....but that is the starting level.
for older 914s and 911s the starting wheel width should be 4.5"
Also currently the wheel diameter or tire aspect ratio is not considered.
For a 914-4 using a 14" diameter wheel with a 50 series tire would give you a considerable gearing advantage over the same car with 15" wheels and same 50 series tires.
Our old rules took those items into consideration the current rules do not.

Many of the points value starting points were derived because the adhoc comm wanted certain cars to fall in certain places. At least that is what has been discussed in the past. I believe they said something like "where the car started was not as important as where it ended up". :?

The wheel width penalty in general for 914's is tough.

8 and 9 inch wheels with DOT tires and could end up with more points than a car with cantilevered slicks on 7 and 8 inch rims if the the 914-4 wheel points are revised. I think cantilevered slicks should get an additional 25 to 50 point penalty over non-cantilevered.
