Points for performance 'chips'...

Post by Ken Jones » Wed Mar 21, 2007 9:19 am

I'd like opinions on a particular mod that may have a huge difference from one car to another... that is the aftermarket performance chip.

At least for the AX side, I think changing the chipset is only 5 pts. But, changing a chip on a Boxster might add 10hp in a certain rpm range and changing the chip set on a turbo could add 200hp (at least what I see in the ads). Woof.

Is it too much 'granularity' to attempt to quantify the impact of advertised chips from one car to another?

Opinions?...

thanks,

kj

a chip for a normally asperated eingine has a small improvement.. a chip for a turbo usually needs additional equipment to get the most gains .. such as larger fuel injectors or shimmed wastegates... so they get addditional points for those things ..

Larry - in your experience, would somebody change the chip in a turbo and not do the complimenting changes to other things? In your estimate, what would be the advantage to chipping only on a turbo?... would they still get significantly more horses relative to the normally aspirated cars?

thanks,

what happens is when you just chip a turbo car .. you get more horespower but at a narrower power band .. So there is no advantage at an autocross, but Maybe at a track for that.. to get the full advantage you need to change alot to get those 200 hp gains ..
