Wheels (Hollow vs Solid)

Post by TTEVIS » Mon Dec 28, 2009 7:37 pm

I have started to look for a second set of rims that I can use for AutoCrossing and Track.
I have found that there are Hollow spoke rims and solid spoke rims and am confused on how to differentiate the two.
According to be initial research 996tt after 2001 should have the hollow versions. But I have been told that I have the solid ones (2002 996tt) and I have seen several adds from a 2002 also claiming to have Hollow but the part numbers appear to come back as solid.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the two different types (Front and Rear) and any easy way to visually identify between the two?

Here is what I have found so far looking on other forums.
Just not sure if this is correct since I have been told that I have the solids on my 02 tt.

Early 2001 996 Turbo
8x18 50mm Solid 996.362.136.01
11x18 45mm Solid 996.362.142.10

Late 2001 and after 996 Turbo
8x18 50mm Hollow 996.362.136.04
11x18 45mm Hollow 996.362.142.03 and 996.362.142.11

2005 996 Turbo S (darker silver wheels)
8x18 50mm Hollow 996.362.136.32
11x18 45mm Hollow 996.362.142.32

... just a guess, but try Sunset up in Oregon with toll free call and confirm numbers.

The numbering I had was correct. But it's interesting in that there is no sure method of knowing by the year.
I was told that Porsche ran out of the Hollows in 02 so many vehicles had solids installed instead. This may have happened in multiple years but I am not sure.
Also the metal valve stem is an indication of a hollow wheel but not a guarantee. Mine are Hollow and are smooth on the back.

Just joined this forum so I'm not quite sure how to post my own questions I will use the 'post reply' as a way to get my question in the mix. I have a 1998/ 993 and the mag wheels have been beat up a little on the city curbs from parking. Any suggestions for a wheel company in the bay area that does good repair and refinishing for wheels?
